A PCU (Pollution Control Unit) also known as a scrubber or electrostatic precipitator is a device that cleans and removes contaminates and mitigates odors from exhaust smoke. Different types may use a multi-stage filtration method or electronic cells that remove suspended contaminates by applying a high-voltage electrostatic charge and then collects the particles on charged plates. Some PCU's employ a self-cleaning auto-wash system and others are manual clean only. Either type must be serviced regularly to insure the airflow is not restricted and the unit is operating at optimum efficiency. Quite often PCU's are "out of sight and out of mind" and therefore neglected until problems with airflow or odors are noticed.
